Dan Webber, the director of information systems at Visible Genetics Inc., could easily list a second career on his curriculum vitae - marketing. As in marketing guru extraordinaire for Tibs President/General Manager Mark Tibbetts.

"Mark calls me his unpaid salesman," Webber says with a smile,  as he explains how he has recommended Tibs to a number of other companies.

And Webber's talking big companies such as Bank of America and Chick-Fil-A. He has been able to open the door for Tibs to such major clients because the Visible Genetics IS man leads the league in using the company himself: In four and a half years, Webber called on Tibs for more than 40 electric and cabling jobs.

He chose Tibs, Webber says, because the company's "commitment to quality is so high." "I've had the experience of dealing with consultants who came in and proposed solutions that didn't meet our standards," he says, pointing out that Tibs is the kind of company that "would rather not take a job than agree to put in something for a client that doesn't meet (Tibs') own standards."

Tibs actually first proved its merit even before the company had its first contract with Webber and Visible Genetics. 

"We were up until 3 a.m. one night ... running out maps before they even had that project booked," Webber recalls.

On another occasion, Webber awarded Tibs one location of a 24-site roll-out... only to end up turning over the other 23 to the Suwanee, Ga., company.

Webber expects to continue to rely on Tibs for assignments with Visible Genetics, a cutting-edge international manufacturer of unique, high-performance automated DNA sequencing systems and tests. Both are aimed at analyzing genes linked to diseases including HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, other infectious diseases, and cancer. 

Since its founding in 1993, Visible Genetics has become a leader in the emerging field of pharmacogenomics - the science of individualizing therapy based on patients' or infectious agents' genetic differences.

Visible Genetics' Atlanta site serves as the center of the company's commercial operations, which means the firm can't go without Tibs wiring it correctly. Or powering it. Tibs provides uninterrupted power supply to Visible Genetics so that it can operate with the security of a back-up power supply that springs to life the second power is disrupted.

"I count on Tibs," Webber says. "When I contract them to do a job, I never have to worry about whether the work will be done well. Tibs has the potential to be a giant in the industry."
