Tibs
Group celebrates 30 years
as a family business
Tibs Group, Inc., a single-source provider of electrical services, power quality and
technology solutions, is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The family owned and operated business opened in DeKalb County as an electrical contractor firm by Marvin Tibbetts in 1971. Along with wife Janice and friend Ron Bagley, Tibbetts built a strong customer base as a new construction contractor for commercial and industrial jobs.
With the boom of the information age and the growth of high-tech companies moving to the Atlanta area, Tibs Group decided to elevate their level of customer service to include the telecommunications realm. Along with this product addition, the company also added a new generation of employees with Marvin's son, Mark, joining the team and younger son Todd joining soon after.
"I had worked with the company during college breaks, and I was usually at the bottom of the totem pole. Whatever needed to be done, that was where I was plugged in," said Mark.
As the company grew into a truly family-operated business, Tibs again met the needs of its clients by adding
a technology and power quality division. The addition of these services brought Tibs some heavy-hitting clients, including Lucent Technologies, Bell South, Hewlett Packard, Southwestern Bell and a business partnership with Avaya Communication.
Nearly five years ago, the eldest Tibbetts retired as CEO in the company. Before his retirement, Tibbetts developed a growth plan for the company and worked with his sons to move into the leadership positions. Mark was named CEO and younger son Todd built upon his accounting background and moved into the CFO position. Along with the Tibbetts brothers, non-family member Dan Phillips was named president of the company.
