Tibs Group wins Emory University contracts

ATLANTA, June 5, 2001Tibs Group, Inc., a single-source provider of electrical services, utility solutions, and technology solutions, has been granted two contracts by Emory University for communications and data cabling projects at the Atlanta university.

Tibs Group, based in Suwanee, Ga., is handling the termination of all voice, data and video lines in Emory’s Phase 2 Science Building and is terminating voice, data, video and coax connections in several Emory dormitories, according to Tibs CEO Mark Tibbetts.

These two projects are just two of several contracts that Tibs has been awarded over the years by Emory, he said. Most recently, Tibs worked on technology projects for the Emory’s Emerson Building, the Woodruff library addition and renovation, and several campus dormitories.

“Tibs does very good quality work, as good as if we had done the work ourselves,” said John Stiles, Emory’s Senior Project Manager, Network Communications. “We worked with Tibs on Emerson, the Phase 1 Science Building, so we are quite familiar with the work that they do.”

“A very ‘educated’ customer when it comes to our line of business, Emory raises the bar for us. With one of the most solid voice/data infrastructures of any college campus in the United States, Emory definitely understands high quality workmanship and design principles,” said Tibbetts.

For the Phase 2 Science Building, Tibs is terminating 290 voice cables, 1780 data cables and 390 station fiber locations and is installing a voice riser, a fiber riser backbone and a coax riser backbone. Tibs is also installing the outside plant voice and fiber backbones that will tie the building into the university’s voice and data network.

“Tibs was selected for the project because of our experience with complex jobs,” said Andrew Petkas, Tibs Senior Engineer, who is overseeing the Phase 2 Building project. “We worked with the team at Emory to figure out what challenges they faced and then we offered them engineering and design services they needed for the project.”  Four to ten Tibs’ employees are working on the Phase 2 Building project at any one time. The building’s certificate of occupancy is set for July 2.

Tibs Senior Project Engineer Buddy Otis is supervising Tibs’ work on the Clairmont Campus Student Housing complex. “We’re terminating over 3,000 voice, data, and coax cabling for multiple dormitories,” said Otis. Work on this project should also be completed in July.

“The best compliment you can give a contractor is to invite them back for future opportunities,” said Keith Foster, Senior Project Manager, Emory University Network Communications. “Based on Tibs’ work at the Clairmont campus, I would invite them back without reservation.”
