Q & A with Marvin Tibbetts of Tibs Group on GTC's workforce development.

Why do you think training your employees is so important?
Both our employees and our company benefit from training. Obviously, growing the knowledge of our employees increases their value and ability to serve customers, but our employees benefit as individuals as well. I've seen improvements in morale, work ethics and overall attitude as a direct result of our company investing in the education of our people.

How long have you been involved with Gwinnett Technical College and the community?
The Tibs Group has been doing work in Gwinnett County for more than 20 years, and I've worked with Gwinnett Tech since the early nineties when I audited some of their electrical courses. Gwinnett Tech's bringing in people from various industries is a great way for the school to ensure that its course material is relevant and applies to today's workforce needs,

Has education always played a role in your company's success?
I'd have to say 'Yes' for sure. In the early days of our company, I would spend an hour a week going over the electrical code with my employees. Now we have an extensive training and education program in place, and we encourage our employees to continue their education outside of work. Here in Gwinnett, we are really fortunate to have an educational resource like Gwinnett Tech because the opportunities for learning are infinite. I was excited to learn of the comprehensive offerings now available at GTC -from management, to communication, networking and cabling -the list goes on and on.

Have you tried the online training yet?
No, not yet, but online training is definitely something we want to look into. Some of our employees live 70 miles away, so their being able to take courses online from their homes or our office would be a great help. I like the idea of Gwinnett Tech's whole blended training program where students take courses in an instructor-led environment or online or both. With Gwinnett Tech providing those options, training our employees is going to be a lot easier.
