For Release: June 25, 2003 Tibs CEO named Small Business Person of the Year
ATLANTA,
June 25, 2002 Tibbetts, who has served as the Tibs Group CEO since 1996, was chosen for the prestigious award based on his entrepreneurship, his contributions to the community and the way he has guided Tibs through tough economic times while still maintaining its role as a leader in providing electrical and technology solutions. "The hard work, determination and dedication of Tibs' employees made this award possible," said Tibbetts. "Because we're a company that pulls together when times get tough, we are able to weather turbulent times and thrive when other companies fail. This award really belongs to the men and women of Tibs Group." This Tibs’ teamwork and its commitment to the community were definitely evident after September 11, 2001, when the company worked night and day providing 80 back-up generators which were shipped to New York to power up the city after the World Trade Center’s terrorist attack. More recently, Tibs has worked on major projects at the Equitable Building, for Emory University, Gwinnett Civic Center and Arena, the Centers for Disease Control and the University Center at Gwinnett. Tibbett's selection was announced at the Chamber's 21st Annual Small Business Person of the Year Awards luncheon. He shares the honor with Randall Pierce of Pierce & Pierce Millwork, Inc., who was also selected as the county's Small Business Person for 2003. This is the first year in the award's history that two entrepreneurs shared the small business honor. Tibbetts was a finalist for the entrepreneurial award last year. Earlier this year he was named a finalist again along with Pierce and three others: Marsha Anderson Bomar, founder of Street Smarts; Bruce P. Arnette, Sr., founder of Carnett's Car Washes; and James Kennedy, president of Jim Anderson & Company. According to the
Chamber, the criteria for the Small Business Person
of the Year is community involvement, response to adversity, innovativeness of a businesss products and services as well as on the growth of a companys revenues and
employees. Finalists were also required to be
members of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, be a primary owner or
shareholder of their companies, and be entrepreneurs. Tibbetts, active in the Gwinnett Chamber,
assumed leadership of Tibs Group, a family owned
business, when his father, the company founder,
retired in 1996. Since then, the Tibs Group has grown to 100 employees
and more than 1000 customers, including such
companies and organizations as ADP, BellSouth, the
Bank of America, Centers for Disease Control, Chick-fil-A, Emory University, Gwinnett County
Schools, Gwinnett Civic Center and Arena, Lincoln
Properties, Lucent Technologies,
and Wal-Mart. Tibbetts began his career at Tibs Group working during high school and college breaks as an electrical apprentice. After completing college, he worked in estimating, engineering, project management and sales management before becoming CEO. Active in the
community, he was most recently appointed to the
Gwinnett Technical College's Board. He has also been
named Member of the Year for the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Atlanta
Chapter, and he has served as a board member for IEC Atlanta and is a Registered Communication Distribution Designer (RCDD) with BICSI International.
